To this day, only two FDA-approved medications have been developed to tackle hair loss - minoxidil and finasteride. For today, we’ll be talking about minoxidil.
Minoxidil’s effectiveness is astounding, especially when fighting androgenetic alopecia. However, we do need to come clean about something: the exact way that minoxidil is able to fight pattern hair loss is not that well understood. It’s a science that still is evolving, but the good thing is that we know it works.
How does minoxidil work?
Minoxidil aims to stimulate your hair follicles by dilating your blood vessels. Otherwise known as a vasodilator, minoxidil expands your blood vessels which allows more nutrients and oxygen to enter your hair follicles. It then takes these ingredients and creates new hair - when the phase is just right.
Minoxidil usually starts working as soon as you apply it to your scalp, however it will take some time to see results. For some, they can see a difference in 2 months, while others may begin to see improvements at 6 months of using minoxidil. Everyone’s scalp is different, so your mileage may vary. If you are consistent with using minoxidil to the manufacturer's recommendations (usually twice a day), you’ll start to see your hair regrow again.
Can minoxidil help grow facial hair?
A question we’ve seen float around is whether minoxidil can be used for facial hair. The answer is a cautious yes. Although the science is solid – in that minoxidil can potentially help with facial hair growth – it would have to be a special formulation with the right percentage of minoxidil. .
